It’s one of those decisions that’s easy to put off, but getting it in place really matters. At its core, life insurance is about protecting the people who rely on you, helping ensure they have financial stability and support when it matters most.
For generations, Canadians have turned to CAA for guidance they can trust. That same commitment carries through to life insurance, where CAA employed licensed advisors do more than recommend policies — they take the time to understand your situation, build a relationship with you, and offer a steady hand in helping you choose the coverage that truly fits your needs.
Shawna Burke, a senior life and living benefits advisor based in Thornhill, Ont., brings more than 30 years of experience to her role. For Burke, the work is as much about people as it is about policies. “I’m fortunate to work alongside a diverse and incredibly talented team who make showing up each day enjoyable,” she says.
“There’s a real sense of connection in what we do, and knowing we’re helping people protect what matters most brings meaning and fulfillment to my work. It doesn’t feel like just a job — it feels like something that genuinely matters.”
We asked Burke to share her insights on some of the most common questions Canadians have about life insurance.

What are the biggest misconceptions when it comes to life insurance — and what are people most surprised to learn?
The number one misconception that people have is that the insurance carrier will find any reason not to pay. Number two: if you have any major ailments, you can’t get life insurance. That’s also not true — I recently found coverage for a woman who has cancer. And a third misconception is: “I’m too old.” While individuals can apply for life insurance in their 80s, the coverage itself doesn’t have to be restricted to a set age limit — it can continue for life, offering protection whenever it’s needed.
What are the advantages of using a CAA life insurance advisor?
The advantage of working with a CAA employed advisor is trust, accountability, never influenced by commissions or carrier obligation, and experience with membership and other CAA insurance products. We have the ability to explain things at a deep level, so you know exactly what your policy is going to do and how it’s going to work. If you’re looking to add a little bit of extra coverage somewhere, we can work with you to create a package that works for your situation. That’s not something an online program can do! We are here to create a solution based on your budget, your needs and your health status. And we have something for everyone, which is great, since we have access to multiple carriers in the marketplace.
What should people make sure to ask their advisor?
Ask what the policy is going to do, and how it’s going to work. Is a medical required? Do I have to requalify? Is this going to renew at some point at a higher premium? Are my premiums going to change in the near future? It’s also important to ask how the advisor is compensated, whether there are any fees, riders or additional charges, when the policy may not pay out, how the claims process works and whether the policy can be changed later if your needs evolve.
What’s one piece of advice you give to people who are starting to think about life insurance?
If you’re thinking about it, do it right away. When you put it on the back burner, sometimes you unfortunately never get to it until it’s too late — the lowest rate you’re going to get is the day you first think about it.
How often should someone revisit their life insurance coverage?
We strongly suggest at least every three years, if not every year. You see your doctor for a physical every year — why not a quick check-in with your advisor to make sure that everything is still correct?
What are some signs that it might be time to update a plan?
If you’ve experienced any major life changes, such as shifts in your finances or responsibilities, changes to your health, aging, the timing of your policy, gaining or losing access to group insurance, or milestones like having children, a death in the family or a divorce, it may be time to revisit your coverage. Have you purchased a new house? Have any of your beneficiaries died? Have your needs changed? Maybe you had $500,000 of coverage before, but now you only need $250,000.
When should someone get life insurance?
As soon as you find yourself thinking about it, you should do it. It’s all about peace of mind and knowing that if something happens, your family is taken care of.
