Some trips are best taken alone, allowing you to move freely, reflect deeply and discover a destination on your own terms. Travelling solo during a shoulder season — the period between a destination’s peak and off-peak travel months — can add to the experience. Shoulder season trips can offer more moderate weather, better availability for flights and accommodations, and unique seasonal moments such as fall colours, calmer tides and local festivals.

For your next solo adventure, consider one of these five destinations that offer the perfect mix of adventure, culture and self-discovery.

1. The Camino de Santiago in Spain.

Hiking the legendary Spanish pilgrimage trail is a milestone achievement, a therapeutic journey of reflection and a chance to connect with other travellers. Visiting in spring or fall means milder temperatures for long walking days and fewer crowds on narrow village paths, making those quiet, contemplative moments even easier to find.

The most popular trail option is the Camino Francés, a 790-km walk which can be done in sections over time or conquered over a month-long trek. You don’t have to walk the entire Camino Francés to reap its rewards. To receive an official Compostela, meaning certificate, from the Pilgrim’s Office in Santiago de Compostela, you only need to cover 100 km in one continuous journey.

Many pilgrims opt for a shorter stretch, such as the vineyard-covered hills between Logroño and Burgos or the final 100 km from Sarria to Santiago de Compostela. This last segment is typically completed over several days rather than in one push, with pilgrims staying in small towns and hostels along the way, delivering the same sense of accomplishment without the pressure of finishing the full route.

2. Fall foliage in Kyoto.

Japan’s imperial capital is home to thousands of preserved temple sites, pristine gardens and thriving cultural precincts. Shoulder seasons offer comfortably cool temperatures, avoiding the draining intensity of the summer sun and allowing you to linger a little longer at iconic attractions.

Immerse yourself in serene walks through Kyoto’s popular sites, such as the red gates of Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine, the towering stalks of the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove and the manicured grounds of the Golden Temple. For a visit in mid-November to early December, follow the Philosopher’s Path along a tree-lined canal or head to Maruyama Park, which glows with bright maple leaves and golden ginkgo trees, offering breathtaking scenery without the peak cherry blossom-season bustle.

3. Costa Rica wellness retreat.

Rejuvenate mind and body with transformative self-care on a lush retreat in the Costa Rican jungle. A visit in late spring or fall means greener landscapes after light rains, fewer fellow retreat-goers and a more intimate connection to the surrounding rainforest.

Reset your rhythm with a trip where wellness and individual renewal are found in yoga and movement classes, guided hikes, clean eating, meditation and even surfing. With smaller class sizes and less crowded trails between peak periods, instructors can offer more personalized guidance, while wildlife sightings feel more immersive. Find pura vida while overlooking the Osa Peninsula on the Pacific Ocean, or sound bathing on the beach next to the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea.

4. Paradise found in the Whitsundays, Australia.

April to May is the ideal time to enjoy the fall season Down Under with a tropical getaway to Australia’s Whitsundays. The benefits of visiting during the off-season include warm days, lower humidity and fewer holiday crowds, making it easier to claim a quiet stretch of sand or a prime snorkelling window.

This archipelago of 74 islands off Queensland’s coast has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world and serves as a gateway to vibrant coral gardens and marine-rich waters. Calmer autumn seas and excellent visibility during these in-between months can make underwater exploration especially rewarding. Active adventures like snorkelling, scuba diving, hiking and sailing rule above and below the waves, but there’s no worries if you just want to lounge poolside at laidback resorts on Hamilton and Hayman islands.

5. Pedestrian-friendly Kraków.

The beautiful former capital of Poland delights by being both walkable and affordable compared to other European cities. A visit in the fall offers crisp air for long strolls, and fewer tour groups are weaving through the streets, which makes it even easier to savour the city at your own pace.

The pedestrian-friendly cobbled streets connect the Old Town’s bustling square, Rynek Główny, with incredible historic buildings like the Gothic cathedral, Cloth Hall and Planty Park’s green gardens. In autumn, Planty Park’s tree-lined paths are especially picturesque due to the changing colours of the leaves. Wander the jumble of streets in trendy Kazimierz, the city’s historic Jewish quarter, and enjoy cultural tours of the city’s excellent medieval museums.

Plan your visit around the many fall festivals hosted by the city, such as the Krakow Honey Harvest Festival, which celebrates traditional beekeeping and regional products, as well as the Krakow Autumn Folk & Arts Festival, which showcases folk music, handmade crafts and local cuisine in the city’s historic squares.
