Blind Spot Monitoring
Blind spot monitoring uses sensors to detect vehicles in adjacent lanes that may not be visible in your mirrors. A warning light or sound alerts you before you change lanes. This feature is especially helpful on highways and in dense traffic, reducing the risk of side-swipe collisions. However, it’s not foolproof. The system may not detect motorcycles, cyclists, or fast-approaching vehicles. Always signal your intention to change lanes or turn, and shoulder-check before making your move.
Lane Departure Warning and Lane Keeping Assist
Lane departure warning alerts you when your vehicle drifts out of its lane without signaling. Lane keeping assist goes a step further, gently steering you back into your lane. These features are crucial for preventing run-off-road crashes and head-on collisions caused by drifting. But they rely on clear road markings. Snow, worn paint, or construction zones can confuse the system. Drivers must remain attentive and avoid relying solely on automation.
Adaptive Headlights
Adaptive headlights adjust their angle based on your steering and speed, improving visibility around curves and over hills. They also reduce glare for oncoming traffic. This feature enhances nighttime driving safety, especially in rural or poorly lit areas. According to Transport Canada, adaptive lighting can help reduce nighttime crashes by up to 10 per cent. Still, drivers should maintain safe speeds and avoid overdriving your headlights (driving so fast that the vehicle's total stopping distance is longer than the distance the headlights illuminate).
Adaptive Cruise Control
Adaptive cruise control maintains a set speed while automatically adjusting to the flow of traffic. It uses radar and cameras to keep a safe following distance, slowing down or speeding up as needed.
This reduces fatigue on long drives and helps prevent rear-end collisions. But it’s not a substitute for attention. Sudden stops or cut-ins can limit the system’s effectiveness. CAA advises drivers to stay alert and be ready to brake manually.
Brake Assist
Brake assist detects emergency braking situations and applies maximum braking force to reduce stopping distance. It’s especially useful when drivers hesitate or don’t press the pedal hard enough during a crisis.
This feature can be life-saving, but it doesn’t replace good judgment. Maintaining safe following distances and scanning ahead are still critical.
Driver Monitoring Systems
Driver monitoring systems track eye movement, head position, and steering input to detect signs of fatigue or distraction. Some systems issue alerts or even slow the vehicle if the driver appears impaired.
These technologies are part of a growing effort to combat distracted driving, which contributes to over 20 per cent of fatal collisions in Canada, according to Transport Canada. But they’re not a license to multitask. Drivers must remain focused and avoid relying on tech to compensate for poor habits.
